Everything you need to know about PreviDent 5000 — what it is, what it treats, how to use it correctly, and who should (and shouldn't) take it in 2026.

If your dentist just handed you a prescription for PreviDent and you're not sure what to make of it, you're in the right place. PreviDent is a prescription-strength fluoride toothpaste, and understanding what it is and how to use it correctly will help you get the most benefit from it.

What Is PreviDent?

PreviDent is a brand-name prescription dental product made by Colgate Oral Pharmaceuticals. Its active ingredient is sodium fluoride at a concentration of 1.1% by weight — equivalent to 5,000 parts per million (ppm) of fluoride. That makes it roughly four to five times stronger than standard over-the-counter toothpaste, which typically contains 1,000–1,500 ppm fluoride.

Because of this higher concentration, PreviDent requires a prescription in the United States. It is not available over the counter in the strength your dentist prescribed.

What Are the Different Types of PreviDent?

PreviDent comes in several formulations, each designed for slightly different patient needs:

PreviDent 5000 Plus — 1.1% sodium fluoride paste in a squeeze tube. The most widely prescribed formulation. Used once daily for dental caries (cavity) prevention. Available in Spearmint and Fruitastic flavors.

PreviDent 5000 Sensitive — 1.1% sodium fluoride + 5% potassium nitrate. Designed for patients with both elevated cavity risk and tooth sensitivity. Used twice daily, followed by rinsing. For ages 12+.

PreviDent 5000 Dry Mouth — SLS-free 1.1% sodium fluoride liquid gel. Formulated for patients with xerostomia (dry mouth), which is a major risk factor for cavities. Used once daily.

PreviDent 5000 BoosterPlus — 1.1% sodium fluoride gel. Used once daily.

PreviDent 5000 Enamel Protect — 1.1% sodium fluoride + 5% potassium nitrate gel. Used twice daily for both enamel protection and sensitivity. For ages 12+.

What Is PreviDent Used For?

PreviDent is used in adults and children 6 years and older (12+ for some formulations) for the following purposes:

Dental caries prevention — The primary use. Fluoride at 5,000 ppm dramatically increases tooth enamel's resistance to bacterial acid attack, reducing the formation of new cavities.

Root caries remineralization — PreviDent 5000 Plus is clinically proven to remineralize root caries by 38% in less than 3 months and 57% at 6 months.

Tooth sensitivity reduction — Formulations containing potassium nitrate (Sensitive, Enamel Protect) calm the nerves in the teeth to reduce sensitivity to hot, cold, sweet, and acidic foods.

Gum disease adjunct therapy — High-fluoride toothpaste helps remove plaque bacteria at the gumline and strengthens exposed root surfaces in patients with gum recession.

Who Is PreviDent Typically Prescribed For?

Not every patient needs prescription-strength fluoride. PreviDent is typically prescribed for patients with:

High cavity risk (multiple cavities per year or per visit)

Active root caries (decay at the gumline or below)

Dry mouth from medications, radiation therapy, or autoimmune conditions like Sjögren's syndrome

Patients in orthodontic treatment (braces) to prevent white-spot lesions

Patients who have undergone head and neck radiation (radiation caries prevention)

Patients with significant gum recession exposing root surfaces

How to Use PreviDent 5000 Correctly

Using PreviDent correctly is important — both for effectiveness and safety. For PreviDent 5000 Plus (the most common formulation):

Apply a thin ribbon of PreviDent to your toothbrush (a pea-sized amount or less)

Brush teeth thoroughly for two minutes — once daily, preferably at bedtime

Spit out the product after brushing — do not swallow

Do not eat, drink, or rinse your mouth for 30 minutes after use — this allows the fluoride to work

Children ages 6–16 should expectorate and rinse their mouth thoroughly immediately after use. Children should not use PreviDent without adult supervision.

What Is the Difference Between PreviDent and Regular Toothpaste?

The key difference is fluoride concentration. Regular OTC toothpaste (like Colgate Total, Crest, or Sensodyne) contains 1,000–1,500 ppm fluoride. PreviDent 5000 contains 5,000 ppm — three to five times higher. This higher concentration makes it significantly more effective at reversing early decay, remineralizing damaged enamel, and protecting against root caries in high-risk patients.

Where to Fill Your PreviDent Prescription

Not all pharmacies regularly stock PreviDent. If your local pharmacy doesn't have it, medfinder can contact pharmacies near you and let you know which ones have your prescription in stock. You can also ask your dentist if they dispense it in-office, or request that your prescription be written for the generic equivalent (sodium fluoride 1.1%) which is more widely available.

Frequently Asked Questions

PreviDent 5000 Plus contains 1.1% sodium fluoride and is used once daily for cavity prevention. PreviDent 5000 Sensitive contains 1.1% sodium fluoride plus 5% potassium nitrate — the potassium nitrate helps reduce tooth sensitivity. The Sensitive formulation is used twice daily and is for patients 12 years and older.

PreviDent is significantly stronger than regular toothpaste. It contains 5,000 ppm fluoride versus 1,000–1,500 ppm in standard OTC toothpaste — making it three to five times more concentrated. It is clinically proven to remineralize root caries and prevent cavities in high-risk patients.

Most dentists recommend using PreviDent in place of your regular toothpaste, not in addition to it. Use your regular toothpaste in the morning and PreviDent at night (bedtime), unless your dentist specifically directs otherwise. Do not use two fluoride products simultaneously unless instructed.

A standard 100mL tube of PreviDent 5000 lasts approximately 30 days when using a thin ribbon (pea-sized amount) once daily. If you're using twice daily (for Sensitive or Enamel Protect formulations), a tube lasts approximately 2 weeks. A 1.8 oz (51g) tube of PreviDent 5000 Plus contains approximately 255 mg of fluoride.
