Learn about PreviDent 5000 side effects — from common tooth staining to rare allergic reactions — and when you should contact your dentist or doctor.

PreviDent is a widely used and generally well-tolerated prescription dental product. Most people use it daily without experiencing significant problems. But like any medication, it can cause side effects in some patients — and knowing what to expect can help you distinguish normal from concerning.

This guide covers the most common and serious side effects of PreviDent 5000, what causes them, and when you should contact your dentist or doctor.

Is PreviDent Safe for Daily Use?

Yes — when used as directed. PreviDent 5000 is applied topically to the teeth, not swallowed. The fluoride works by penetrating enamel to strengthen it against acid attack. When used correctly — brushing once or twice daily, then spitting and not rinsing for 30 minutes — PreviDent is safe for long-term use in adults and children 6 years and older.

The main safety concern is swallowing rather than the topical application itself. Ingesting large amounts of fluoride can cause toxicity. This is why PreviDent should always be kept away from young children and used with supervision for kids under 12.

Common Side Effects of PreviDent 5000

Most patients do not experience noticeable side effects from PreviDent. Those that do occur are usually related to taste, texture preference, or very mild gum sensitivity. The most commonly reported issues include:

Taste changes or unpleasant flavor — PreviDent has a higher concentration of sodium fluoride than regular toothpaste, which can produce a slightly different taste. Most patients adapt within a few days.

Mild gum irritation — Some patients experience slight gum sensitivity when first starting PreviDent. This usually resolves within the first week.

White or chalky spots on teeth — Can occur with excessive ingestion over time (fluorosis). Not a concern in adults using the product topically as directed.

Staining or pitting of teeth — May occur with chronic overuse or excessive ingestion, particularly in children under 6. Tell your dentist or doctor right away if you notice teeth becoming stained or pitted.

Serious Side Effects of PreviDent 5000

Serious side effects from topical PreviDent are rare when the product is used as directed. The situations that can cause serious problems include accidental swallowing, particularly in children. Serious effects include:

Fluoride toxicity (from swallowing) — Nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, and salivation can occur within 30 minutes of ingesting too much fluoride. A thin ribbon of PreviDent contains approximately 2.5 mg fluoride; toxicity symptoms typically begin at >5 mg/kg body weight. If more than 15 mg/kg is ingested, call 911 or go to the emergency room immediately.

Dental fluorosis in children under 6 — Prolonged swallowing during early tooth development can cause fluorosis (white streaks or brown spots on permanent teeth). PreviDent is not for use in children under 6 unless specifically directed by a dentist.

Allergic reaction — Very rare. Signs include hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. This is a medical emergency — call 911.

What to Do If Someone Swallows PreviDent

Immediate action depends on the amount swallowed:

Small amount (a lick or small smear, especially from a child) — Give a glass of milk to bind the fluoride. Call Poison Control (1-800-222-1222) for guidance if concerned.

More than 5 mg fluoride/kg body weight — Induce vomiting, give milk, and seek immediate medical attention.

More than 15 mg/kg body weight — Go to the emergency room immediately.

When to Call Your Dentist

Contact your dentist if you experience any of the following while using PreviDent:

Teeth become noticeably stained or pitted

Gum irritation that doesn't resolve after a week

Your symptoms (tooth sensitivity, cavities) are not improving after 4–6 weeks of use

You are pregnant or breastfeeding (discuss continued use with your provider)

You have kidney disease (fluoride clearance may be affected; your dentist should be aware)

Tips to Minimize Side Effects

Always spit out the product after brushing — do not swallow

Do not eat, drink, or rinse for 30 minutes after use (adults); children should rinse thoroughly

Apply only a thin ribbon — pea-sized amount or as instructed

Keep PreviDent away from children under 6, and supervise children aged 6–12

Store at room temperature away from heat and moisture; do not freeze

Frequently Asked Questions

Tooth staining from PreviDent is not expected with normal topical use in adults. Staining and pitting are associated with excessive ingestion of fluoride (fluorosis), primarily in young children during tooth development. If you notice teeth becoming stained or pitted, contact your dentist.

If a child swallows a small amount, give them milk to help bind the fluoride and call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222. For larger amounts (above 5 mg fluoride/kg body weight), induce vomiting, give milk, and seek immediate medical attention. For a dose above 15 mg/kg, go to the emergency room immediately.

PreviDent is generally considered Category A in pregnancy — controlled studies show no evidence of fetal risk with topical use. However, discuss any prescription medication with your OB or dentist before use during pregnancy. Caution is recommended with breastfeeding as the effect on breast milk is not fully established.

Use caution. Fluoride is cleared through the kidneys, so patients with kidney disease may have reduced fluoride clearance. Tell your dentist or doctor about any kidney problems before using PreviDent so they can determine whether it's appropriate and at what frequency.
