Yasmin 28 is a monophasic combination oral contraceptive containing two synthetic hormones:

Ethinyl estradiol (0.03 mg): A synthetic estrogen. This is a standard dose used in many combination oral contraceptives.

What Is Yasmin 28 Used For?

How Effective Is Yasmin 28?

With perfect use (taking every pill on time with no missed doses), Yasmin 28 is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy — meaning fewer than 1 in 100 women will get pregnant in a year. With typical use (accounting for occasional missed pills), the failure rate is about 7% per year (about 7 in 100 women).

The most important factor in effectiveness is consistency. Taking the pill at the same time each day gives you the best protection. Yasmin 28 does NOT protect against HIV or other sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Yasmin 28 Dosage: How to Take It

Each Yasmin 28 blister pack contains 28 tablets in two types:

21 yellow tablets (active): Each contains 3 mg drospirenone + 0.03 mg ethinyl estradiol

7 white tablets (inert/placebo): Contain no active hormones; keep you in the habit of taking a pill daily

Instructions:

Take one tablet daily at the same time, following the pack order.

Start on the first day of your period (Day 1 start) or the first Sunday after your period begins (Sunday start). With Sunday start, use backup contraception for the first 7 days.

Take with food or at bedtime to minimize nausea.

After completing all 28 tablets, start a new pack the next day — regardless of whether your period has finished.

Who Should NOT Take Yasmin 28?

Yasmin 28 is contraindicated (should not be used) in women who:

Smoke and are over age 35

Have a history of blood clots (DVT, PE), stroke, or heart attack

Have uncontrolled high blood pressure

Have kidney, liver, or adrenal disease

Have migraine with aura (especially if over 35)

Are pregnant or breastfeeding

How Does Yasmin 28 Differ from Other Pills?

Yasmin 28's unique feature is drospirenone — a progestin not found in most birth control pills. Because it acts like a mild diuretic (similar to spironolactone), it may cause less water retention and bloating compared to pills with older progestins like levonorgestrel or norethindrone. Some patients also find it helpful for acne.

The tradeoff: drospirenone carries a slightly higher blood clot risk than levonorgestrel-based pills, and it can raise potassium levels — which is a concern for patients with certain conditions or on specific medications.
