New to Lyrica (pregabalin)? This complete guide covers what it treats, how to take it, dosing, side effects, cost, and everything else you need to know in 2026.

Lyrica is one of the most recognized brand names in pain management — but there's a lot of confusion about exactly what it does, who it's for, and how it compares to other options. Whether you've just been prescribed it or you're researching whether it might be right for you, this guide covers everything you need to know.

What Is Lyrica (Pregabalin)?

Lyrica is the brand name for pregabalin, an anticonvulsant and analgesic (pain-relieving) medication. It belongs to a class called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) analogs and is classified as a Schedule V controlled substance by the DEA.

Pfizer first received FDA approval for Lyrica in December 2004. Generic pregabalin became available in the United States in July 2019, dramatically reducing the cost. Today, most patients are prescribed generic pregabalin rather than brand Lyrica — they are therapeutically equivalent.

What Conditions Does Lyrica Treat?

The FDA has approved pregabalin for the following conditions:

Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN): Nerve pain caused by diabetes. Symptoms include burning, tingling, and numbness, usually in the feet and legs.

Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN): Nerve pain that persists after a shingles (herpes zoster) infection has resolved.

Spinal cord injury neuropathic pain: Nerve pain resulting from damage to the spinal cord.

Fibromyalgia: A chronic condition characterized by widespread muscle pain, fatigue, and sleep problems. Pregabalin was approved for fibromyalgia in 2007.

Partial-onset seizures (adjunctive therapy): Used along with other seizure medications in adults and children aged at least 1 month to help control partial seizures.

Off-label uses (not FDA-approved but sometimes prescribed) include generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety, and insomnia — though evidence for these uses varies.

What Forms Does Lyrica Come In?

Capsules (immediate-release): 25 mg, 50 mg, 75 mg, 100 mg, 150 mg, 200 mg, 225 mg, and 300 mg. Taken 2–3 times daily.

Oral solution: 20 mg/mL. Used for patients who have difficulty swallowing capsules or who need precise lower doses.

Extended-release tablets (Lyrica CR): 82.5 mg, 165 mg, 330 mg. Taken once daily with the evening meal. Approved only for DPN and PHN.

Typical Pregabalin Dosing

Dosing depends on your condition and how well you tolerate it:

Starting dose: 150 mg/day (75 mg twice daily or 50 mg three times daily).

Typical maintenance dose: 300 mg/day (divided doses). May increase to 600 mg/day for fibromyalgia if needed and tolerated.

Renal adjustment: Required for patients with kidney disease (CrCl below 60 mL/min). The starting dose and maximum dose are reduced proportionally.

Your doctor will start you at the lowest effective dose and increase slowly to minimize side effects. It can take 1–4 weeks to reach full pain-relief effectiveness.

How to Take Lyrica Correctly

Capsules and oral solution: Can be taken with or without food. Take at evenly spaced intervals throughout the day.

Lyrica CR tablets: Must be taken with the evening meal. Do not crush, break, or chew — swallow whole.

Do not drink alcohol while taking pregabalin — it significantly worsens dizziness and sedation.

Never stop pregabalin suddenly — taper under your doctor's guidance to avoid withdrawal symptoms.

How Much Does Generic Pregabalin Cost in 2026?

Generic pregabalin is much more affordable than brand Lyrica was before patent expiration:

Retail price without insurance: approximately $330–$450 for a 30-day supply.

With GoodRx coupon: as low as $14 per month (96% off retail).

With insurance: typically a $10–$40 copay for generic (Tier 2–3 on most plans).

Is Lyrica Available as a Generic?

Yes. The FDA approved generic pregabalin in July 2019. Multiple manufacturers now make it, and it's available at virtually every pharmacy in the U.S. The generic is therapeutically equivalent to brand Lyrica — same active ingredient, same dosage forms, same effectiveness. Frequently Asked Questions

Lyrica (pregabalin) is FDA-approved for four conditions: neuropathic pain associated with diabetic peripheral neuropathy, postherpetic neuralgia (shingles-related nerve pain), neuropathic pain from spinal cord injury, and fibromyalgia. It is also used as adjunctive (add-on) therapy for partial-onset seizures in adults and children 1 month and older. Off-label, it is sometimes prescribed for generalized anxiety disorder.

Yes. The FDA confirmed that generic pregabalin is therapeutically equivalent to brand-name Lyrica. It contains the same active ingredient (pregabalin) at the same dose, in the same dosage form. Generic pregabalin became available in July 2019, and today it costs dramatically less than brand Lyrica — often as low as $14 per month with a GoodRx coupon versus hundreds of dollars for the brand.

Some patients notice a reduction in pain within the first week of taking pregabalin. However, full effectiveness typically develops over 2–4 weeks as the dose is titrated upward. For seizure management, the anticonvulsant effects are usually established once a therapeutic dose is reached. Give the medication at least a few weeks before evaluating whether it's working.

Taking Lyrica and gabapentin together is generally not recommended. Both are gabapentinoids that work through the same mechanism, and there is no established benefit to combining them. Concurrent use increases the risk of side effects like dizziness, sedation, and respiratory depression without additional therapeutic benefit. If your current medication isn't providing adequate relief, talk to your doctor about adjusting the dose rather than adding the other drug.
