Everything you need to know about Benadryl (diphenhydramine) in 2026 — what it treats, correct dosing for adults and children, forms available, and important safety tips.

Benadryl is one of the most recognized medication names in America — but many people don't fully know what it contains, what it's approved for, how to dose it correctly, or what its limitations are. This guide covers everything you need to know about Benadryl (diphenhydramine) in 2026.

What Is Benadryl?

Benadryl is the brand name for diphenhydramine hydrochloride, a first-generation H1 antihistamine. It is manufactured by McNeil Consumer Healthcare (a Johnson & Johnson company) and is one of the oldest and most widely used OTC medications in the United States. Diphenhydramine was first synthesized in 1943, became the first FDA-approved prescription antihistamine in 1946, and was moved to over-the-counter status in the 1980s.

Diphenhydramine is also sold under other brand names including ZzzQuil (as a sleep aid), Unisom SleepGels, Sominex, Diphenhist, and Nytol, as well as dozens of generic versions. It is not a controlled substance and requires no prescription.

What Is Benadryl Used For?

Benadryl is FDA-approved and commonly used for:

Allergic rhinitis (hay fever): Relieves runny nose, sneezing, itchy throat, and itchy/watery eyes caused by pollen, pet dander, dust, and other allergens

Hives (urticaria) and skin itching: Helps relieve allergic skin reactions, mild hives, bug bites, and rashes

Short-term insomnia: OTC sleep aid for adults 12 and older (occasional use only)

Motion sickness: Prevention and treatment of nausea and dizziness associated with travel

Common cold symptoms: Temporary relief of runny nose and sneezing associated with the common cold

Anaphylaxis adjunct: Injectable diphenhydramine is used in hospital settings as an adjunct to epinephrine in severe allergic reactions (after the acute crisis is stabilized)

Benadryl Dosage for Adults

For adults and children 12 years and older:

Allergy and cold symptoms: 25–50 mg every 4–6 hours as needed; do not exceed 6 doses (300 mg) in 24 hours

Sleep aid: 50 mg at bedtime (one-time dose; not for regular nightly use)

Motion sickness: 25–50 mg 30 minutes before travel, then every 4–6 hours during travel

Benadryl Dosage for Children

Children's dosing depends on age and weight. Always check the package label for the specific product you're using:

Children 6–11 years: 12.5–25 mg every 4–6 hours as needed; do not exceed 6 doses in 24 hours

Children under 6: Consult a pediatrician before use. Children under 2 years should not be given diphenhydramine unless under direct physician supervision.

Important: Do not give children's liquid Benadryl with a household teaspoon — use only the measuring cup provided with the package, as inaccurate dosing can be dangerous.

Available Forms of Benadryl (Diphenhydramine)

Tablets and caplets: 25 mg and 50 mg (oral, for adults and older children)

Liquid gel capsules (liqui-gels): 25 mg (soft gel, fast-absorbing)

Oral liquid: 12.5 mg/5 mL (children's formula)

Chewable tablets: 12.5 mg (for children 6 and older)

Topical cream, gel, spray, and stick: 1–2% diphenhydramine (for itch relief applied to skin)

Injectable solution: 50 mg/mL (hospital use only; not available OTC)

Important Warnings and Precautions

Do not drive or operate heavy machinery — Benadryl causes drowsiness that impairs reaction time and judgment

Avoid alcohol while taking Benadryl — additive CNS depression significantly increases impairment

Do not use multiple diphenhydramine products at the same time — many cold, sleep, and allergy medications contain diphenhydramine, and doubling up can cause overdose

Not for children under 2 years without physician supervision

Caution in elderly patients, those with BPH, glaucoma, or lung disease

Frequently Asked Questions

The active ingredient in Benadryl is diphenhydramine hydrochloride (diphenhydramine HCl), a first-generation H1 antihistamine. All Benadryl allergy products contain diphenhydramine as the active ingredient. Generic diphenhydramine sold under various names contains the same active ingredient.

Benadryl starts working within 15–30 minutes when taken orally, with peak effect around 1–2 hours after a dose. Effects last 4–6 hours, though drowsiness may persist for 6–8 hours. Liquid gel capsule forms may absorb slightly faster than regular tablets.

Yes. Benadryl can be taken with or without food. Taking it with food or milk may help reduce stomach upset if you experience nausea. Food does not significantly affect the absorption of diphenhydramine.

Ask your doctor or OB/GYN before taking Benadryl during pregnancy. Diphenhydramine crosses the placenta and is excreted in breast milk. Occasional use at low doses has generally been considered acceptable in pregnancy, but this decision should be made with your healthcare provider, especially in the first trimester.

Yes. ZzzQuil and Unisom SleepGels both contain diphenhydramine — the same active ingredient as Benadryl — at a 50 mg dose, marketed specifically as a sleep aid. The allergy-focused Benadryl products typically contain 25 mg. These products are clinically identical in terms of active ingredient; the main difference is the dose and the marketing label.
