Learn which medications, supplements, and foods interact with Armour Thyroid and what to tell your doctor to stay safe.
Armour Thyroid can interact with a surprising number of medications, supplements, and even everyday foods. Some interactions reduce how well Armour Thyroid works. Others can cause dangerous side effects. Knowing what to watch for — and what to tell your doctor — helps you get the most from your treatment.
Drug interactions with Armour Thyroid generally fall into three categories:
Armour Thyroid can increase the blood-thinning effect of warfarin, raising the risk of bleeding. If you take both, your doctor will need to monitor your INR levels closely and may adjust your warfarin dose.
Thyroid hormones can raise blood sugar levels. If you start Armour Thyroid or change your dose, your diabetes medications may need adjusting. Monitor your blood sugar more frequently during transitions.
Armour Thyroid can reduce digoxin levels in your blood, making it less effective. Your doctor may need to increase your digoxin dose and check levels regularly.
Combining Armour Thyroid with stimulant drugs increases the risk of heart problems, including rapid heartbeat and cardiac toxicity. This is highlighted in Armour Thyroid's boxed warning.
Oral estrogen can increase thyroid-binding proteins in your blood, which may reduce the amount of free (active) thyroid hormone available. If you start or stop estrogen therapy, your Armour Thyroid dose may need adjusting.
These medications speed up the metabolism of thyroid hormones, potentially reducing Armour Thyroid's effectiveness. Your doctor may need to increase your thyroid dose.
Lithium can cause hypothyroidism on its own. If you take lithium and Armour Thyroid, your thyroid levels need close monitoring.
This heart rhythm medication contains iodine and can significantly affect thyroid function — both causing hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. Close monitoring is essential.
Several common supplements interfere with Armour Thyroid absorption. The key rule: take these at least 4 hours apart from your Armour Thyroid dose.
If you take a daily multivitamin that contains calcium or iron, take it at lunch or dinner — not with your morning Armour Thyroid.
What you eat and drink around the time you take Armour Thyroid matters:
The simplest strategy: take Armour Thyroid first thing in the morning with plain water, then wait 30-60 minutes before eating or drinking anything else.
Before starting Armour Thyroid — or any time your medications change — make sure your doctor knows about:
Also tell your doctor if you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, as thyroid hormone needs often change during these times.

Armour Thyroid is a safe and effective medication when used properly — but interactions with other drugs, supplements, and foods can reduce how well it works or increase your risk of side effects. The most important steps: take it on an empty stomach, separate it from calcium and iron by 4 hours, and keep your doctor informed about everything you take.
