Alternatives to Somatropin If You Can't Fill Your Prescription

Option 1: Switch to a Different Daily Somatropin Brand

The most straightforward alternative is switching to a different brand of daily somatropin. All FDA-approved daily somatropin products contain the same active molecule — recombinant human growth hormone — and your body responds to them the same way. Your prescriber can write a new prescription for whichever brand is currently available.

Available daily somatropin brands in 2026 include:

Norditropin FlexPro (Novo Nordisk) — Prefilled pen; available in 5 mg/1.5 mL, 10 mg/1.5 mL, and 15 mg/1.5 mL. The most consistently available brand in 2026.

Genotropin (Pfizer) — Pen and MiniQuick single-dose syringe; widely used for pediatric and adult GHD.

Omnitrope (Sandoz/Novartis) — Pen cartridge or vial; generally available and typically lower cost than branded products.

Zomacton (Ferring) — Vial for injection; may require different needles.

Important: Even though the active ingredient is the same, devices differ. Your nurse or pharmacist should walk you through training on any new pen or injection system before you start.

Option 2: Somapacitan (Sogroya) — Once-Weekly Growth Hormone

Sogroya (somapacitan-beco) by Novo Nordisk is a once-weekly long-acting growth hormone FDA-approved for both adults with GHD and pediatric patients aged 2.5 years and older. It uses the same growth hormone receptor pathway as daily somatropin but is modified for a longer half-life.

Clinical trials found efficacy comparable to daily somatropin. The main advantage: only one injection per week instead of daily. This can significantly improve adherence, especially for children. Commercially insured patients may pay as little as $0 with Novo Nordisk's co-pay savings program (up to a $5,000 annual maximum).

Option 3: Lonapegsomatropin (Skytrofa) — Once-Weekly Somatropin Prodrug

Skytrofa (lonapegsomatropin-tcgd) by Ascendis Pharma is a unique once-weekly growth hormone that is a prodrug of somatropin itself. Once injected, it releases unmodified somatropin over the course of a week. It is FDA-approved for pediatric patients aged 1 year and older (weighing at least 11.5 kg) with growth failure due to inadequate GH secretion, and for adults with GHD.

A 2025 network meta-analysis in the Journal of the Endocrine Society found lonapegsomatropin was associated with statistically significantly higher annualized height velocity at 52 weeks compared to daily somatropin (mean difference: 0.90 cm/year). This makes it a compelling option for some pediatric patients.

Option 4: Somatrogon (Ngenla) — Once-Weekly for Children

Ngenla (somatrogon-ghla) by Pfizer is a once-weekly long-acting growth hormone FDA-approved for pediatric patients aged 3 years and older with growth failure due to inadequate GH secretion. It is not currently approved for adults. Ngenla produces higher IGF-1 levels than daily somatropin, which may be advantageous in some cases but requires monitoring.
