What Is Zomig?

Zomig is the brand name for zolmitriptan, a prescription medication used to treat acute migraine headaches in adults. It was first approved by the FDA in 1997 and belongs to a class of medications called triptans—drugs that work by targeting specific serotonin receptors in the brain to relieve migraine pain.

Zomig is also available as a generic under the name zolmitriptan, which is manufactured by multiple pharmaceutical companies and is available at most major pharmacies. Generic zolmitriptan is bioequivalent to brand-name Zomig—it works the same way and at the same strength.

What Is Zomig Used For?

Zomig is FDA-approved for the acute (immediate) treatment of migraine headaches with or without aura in adults. Key points about its use:

It treats a migraine that has already started. It does NOT prevent migraines from occurring.

It relieves headache pain, as well as migraine-associated symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound.

It is NOT approved for the treatment of cluster headaches.

What Forms Does Zomig Come In?

Zomig (zolmitriptan) comes in three formulations:

Film-coated tablets: Available in 2.5 mg and 5 mg. The 2.5 mg tablet is scored (can be split in half to make a 1.25 mg dose).

Orally disintegrating tablets (Zomig-ZMT): Available in 2.5 mg and 5 mg. Placed on the tongue and dissolves without water. Useful when nausea makes swallowing difficult. Note: ODT contains phenylalanine; not for patients with PKU.

Nasal spray: Available in 2.5 mg and 5 mg. Absorbed rapidly through nasal mucosa. Has the fastest onset of the three formulations (bioavailability ~102%). Approved for ages 12 and older.

How Do You Take Zomig?

Take Zomig at the first sign of a migraine headache. Do not take it during the aura phase before the headache starts—it works best once the headache phase begins.

Starting dose: 1.25 mg or 2.5 mg. Most clinical trials used 2.5 mg as the standard starting dose.

Maximum single dose: 5 mg per dose.

Repeat dose: If your headache returns or doesn't fully resolve, you can take a second dose—but wait at least 2 hours after the first dose.

Maximum daily dose: 10 mg in any 24-hour period.

Frequency limit: Do not use Zomig to treat more than 3 migraines per 30-day period (safety not established beyond this). See your doctor if you have more frequent attacks.

Who Should NOT Take Zomig?

Do not take Zomig if you have:

Coronary heart disease, angina, or a history of heart attack

History of stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA)

Hemiplegic or basilar migraine

Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome or other cardiac conduction disorders

Used another triptan or ergotamine medication in the past 24 hours

Used an MAO-A inhibitor (certain antidepressants) in the past 2 weeks
