Jublia (efinaconazole) is a prescription topical antifungal for toenail fungus. Learn what it treats, how to use it, and what to expect from treatment in 2026.

Jublia is a prescription topical antifungal medication used to treat toenail fungus. It comes as a solution that you apply directly to the nail once a day for nearly a full year. Here's everything you need to know about Jublia in 2026 — from what it treats to how to apply it correctly.

What Is Jublia?

Jublia is the brand name for efinaconazole 10% topical solution. It belongs to a class of drugs called triazole antifungals (azole antifungals). Jublia is manufactured by Ortho Dermatologics, a subsidiary of Bausch Health Companies.

The FDA first approved Jublia in June 2014 for adults. In April 2020, the agency expanded its approval to include patients as young as 6 years old, making it one of the few prescription nail fungus treatments approved for children.

What Does Jublia Treat?

Jublia is FDA-approved to treat onychomycosis — the medical term for fungal nail infection — specifically of the toenails. It targets two common dermatophyte fungi:

Trichophyton rubrum: The most common cause of nail fungus in the United States, responsible for roughly 70% of cases.

Trichophyton mentagrophytes: Another common dermatophyte that infects the nail and surrounding skin.

Jublia is for toenails only — it is not FDA-approved for fingernail infections, though some providers prescribe it off-label in that setting.

What Does Toenail Fungus Look Like?

Common signs of toenail fungus that may indicate you need a treatment like Jublia include:

Thickened, brittle, or crumbly nails

Yellow, brown, white, or gray nail discoloration

Nail separation from the nail bed (onycholysis)

Distorted nail shape or debris under the nail

Diagnosis should be confirmed by a healthcare provider before starting treatment — other conditions (psoriasis, trauma, nail lichen planus) can look identical to fungal infection.

How to Use Jublia: Step-by-Step Instructions

Wash your feet and let them dry. Wait at least 10 minutes after showering, bathing, or washing before applying Jublia. Nails must be clean and dry.

Remove the cap from the Jublia bottle. The cap unscrews to reveal an integrated flow-through brush applicator.

Apply to the entire toenail. Use the brush to spread Jublia over the complete toenail surface, including the cuticle, the skin folds beside the nail, the toenail bed (underneath the nail edge), and the undersurface of the nail. Apply twice to the big toenail.

Let it dry completely. Wait for the area to dry before putting on socks, shoes, or getting into bed.

Apply once daily for 48 weeks. Treatment is almost 11 months. Do not stop early — even if nails look better — unless your provider tells you to. Stopping too soon can cause the infection to return.

What Not to Do While Using Jublia

Do NOT use nail polish, gel nails, or acrylic nails during treatment

Avoid pedicures at salons during treatment

Do NOT use near heat or open flames — the solution is flammable

Do NOT use in your mouth, eyes, or vagina — for external use on toenails and surrounding skin only

How Effective Is Jublia?

In two large phase 3 clinical trials with a total of 1,655 patients, Jublia achieved a complete cure rate of 17.8% in Trial 1 and 15.2% in Trial 2. The placebo (vehicle only) had complete cure rates of just 3.3% and 5.5%.

"Complete or almost complete cure" — defined as 5% or less of the target toenail affected — was achieved by 26.4% (Trial 1) and 23.4% (Trial 2) of Jublia patients. Mycologic cure (negative lab tests with no clinical involvement) was achieved in approximately 55% of patients.

While these numbers may not sound dramatic, keep in mind that toenail fungus is notoriously difficult to treat with any topical agent — Jublia is one of the most effective topical options available, and significantly outperforms ciclopirox nail lacquer (8–11% complete cure).

Frequently Asked Questions

Jublia takes a long time to show visible results because toenails grow slowly — only about 1 mm per month. Most patients don't see significant improvement until several months into the 48-week treatment course. In clinical trials, complete cure was assessed at week 52 (4 weeks after finishing treatment). Don't stop early just because results aren't visible yet.

Jublia is only FDA-approved for toenail fungus. It has not been adequately studied for fingernail infections. Some providers may prescribe it off-label for fingernails, but most guidelines recommend oral terbinafine as the preferred treatment for fingernail onychomycosis, which has a shorter treatment duration and higher cure rates.

Yes. In 2020, the FDA expanded Jublia's approved age range to include patients 6 years and older. Clinical studies in children ages 6–16 showed it was well tolerated and effective. Jublia is not recommended for children under 6 years old as safety and efficacy have not been established in that age group.

Jublia is a clear, colorless to pale yellow topical solution supplied in a white plastic bottle with an integrated flow-through brush applicator. It comes in 4 mL and 8 mL sizes. The solution has an alcohol base and dries quickly after application.

No. Jublia (efinaconazole) is not a controlled substance and is not scheduled by the DEA. It can be prescribed by any licensed healthcare provider, filled at any pharmacy, and refilled without special paperwork or restrictions related to controlled substance regulations.
