What is Triumeq? Learn about this once-daily HIV medication — its ingredients, FDA-approved uses, proper dosage, and key things to know before starting in 2026.

Triumeq is a once-daily prescription tablet used to treat HIV-1 (human immunodeficiency virus type 1) infection in adults and certain children. It is one of several complete antiretroviral regimens that combine multiple HIV medications into a single pill, making it easier for patients to stay on treatment consistently. Here's a complete overview of what Triumeq is, how it works, and what you need to know before starting it.

What Is Triumeq?

Triumeq is a fixed-dose combination antiretroviral medication made by ViiV Healthcare. It was first approved by the U.S. FDA in August 2014. Each purple, oval Triumeq tablet contains three active ingredients:

Abacavir 600 mg — a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI)

Dolutegravir 50 mg — an integrase strand transfer inhibitor (INSTI)

Lamivudine 300 mg — a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI)

Together, these three drugs target HIV from multiple angles — blocking both reverse transcription and viral DNA integration. This multi-mechanism approach makes Triumeq highly effective and gives it a high barrier to resistance development.

What Is Triumeq PD?

Triumeq PD is the pediatric formulation of the same medication. Triumeq PD tablets are smaller, yellow, and flavored (strawberry cream), designed to be dissolved in water before swallowing — making them easier for children and patients who have difficulty swallowing pills. Each Triumeq PD tablet contains 60 mg abacavir / 5 mg dolutegravir / 30 mg lamivudine. Important: Triumeq adult tablets and Triumeq PD tablets are NOT interchangeable on a milligram-per-milligram basis.

Who Is Triumeq Approved For?

Triumeq is FDA-approved for:

Adults with HIV-1 infection

Children and adolescents aged 12 years and older who weigh at least 40 kg (88 lbs)

Triumeq PD is approved for children aged 3 months and older who weigh at least 6 kg (13 lbs), with weight-based dosing.

Triumeq can be used for both treatment-naive patients (starting HIV treatment for the first time) and treatment-experienced patients (switching from another regimen), subject to resistance testing and clinical assessment.

What Is the Triumeq Dosage?

For adults and adolescents weighing at least 40 kg: one Triumeq tablet (600/50/300 mg) taken once daily, with or without food. Do not chew, cut, or crush the tablets. Take it at the same time each day to help maintain a consistent level of the medication in your body.

If you're taking antacids or supplements that contain magnesium, aluminum, calcium, or iron, follow specific timing instructions from your provider — these can interfere with dolutegravir absorption. Under fasting conditions, take Triumeq 2 hours before or 6 hours after these supplements. When taken with food, Triumeq and calcium/iron supplements can be taken at the same time.

Does Triumeq Cure HIV?

No. Triumeq does not cure HIV. However, when taken consistently as prescribed, it suppresses HIV viral load to undetectable levels in most patients. Achieving and maintaining an undetectable viral load allows the immune system to recover, prevents AIDS, and reduces the risk of HIV transmission to virtually zero (U=U: Undetectable = Untransmittable). People with HIV who take antiretroviral therapy including Triumeq consistently can expect to live a near-normal lifespan.

What Testing Is Required Before Starting Triumeq?

HLA-B*5701 genetic test: Mandatory before starting. Patients positive for the HLA-B*5701 allele cannot take abacavir due to risk of life-threatening hypersensitivity reaction.

Hepatitis B screening: Required before starting. Lamivudine partially treats hepatitis B; stopping Triumeq in patients with HBV can cause severe hepatitis B flares.

HIV resistance testing: Recommended before starting to rule out pre-existing resistance to any of the three drug components.

Is Triumeq a Controlled Substance?

No. Triumeq is not a controlled substance and is not scheduled by the DEA. It requires a prescription from a licensed provider, but there are no special DEA reporting or prescribing restrictions. Any licensed prescriber — including infectious disease specialists, primary care providers, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants — can prescribe it.

Triumeq begins working immediately, but it typically takes 4–8 weeks of consistent daily dosing to achieve an undetectable HIV viral load. Your provider will monitor your viral load and CD4 count with regular blood tests to confirm the medication is working.
